Crayon Resist Name Recognition Activity

Crayon Resist Name Recognition Activity

This crayon resist activity required one-on-one and parent assistance with my 3 and a half year old. However, older children will be able to complete this activity unassisted.

{you will need…}

Oil pastels or Wax oil crayon
Thick art paper or card
A coloured water wash (I use edible food colouring powder mixed in water)
Brush to apply the coloured water
Paper towels for wiping hands after using oil pastels.
Newspaper to place under work when using oil pastels.Prepare the paint area with a table cover.
Have a clean up bucket ready for washing hands and cleaning equipment.

{what you do…}

With the paper in landscape orientation fold the paper in half. Write your child’s name on the line using an oil pastel.

Fold the paper in half again and rub with your fingers over the image of the written name.

Unfold the paper and you will see a shadow of the name below the line.

Trace over the shadow with your oil pastel.

Decorate the paper. We have outlined the name to make it pop from the page.

Note: We used normal crayons to make some drawings over the page but you’ll notice once the colour wash is applied normal crayon doesn’t stand out.

Once you’ve decorated the page with oil pastels, apply a colour wash over the entire page and leave to dry.

You’ll notice my 3 year olds interpretation of painting over the whole page!

Here’s another that has been completely covered with the colour wash.
