This week I decided to look more closely at the possibilities offered by the humble sandpit and create an invitation to play. Our sandpit is used all the time. It has been easier to just let them go for it but after a while everything gets dumped in there. I thought I would clean it up and add some new things that would suggest new play possibilities.
A stump and plank for different levels of play or a seat. A tub of water and sea animals.
When Chook first saw the new arrangement of the sandpit, he was quite hesitant and kept asking “What’s it from?” I was surprised by his reaction. I had expected him to just dive right in there and start playing with the sea creatures. Instead he took his time.
He found a sea horse in the water and begun to sing the first verse of Puff The Magic Dragon, our current bedtime story. Too cute!
Chook wanted to go fishing in the water with the sea animals. I found a stick and some string, made a noose and we tried to go fishing by putting the noose over the sea creature. This was very difficult! And the noose wouldn’t slide when it was wet. It was too challenging, so before the activity turned into tears I placed the sea creature in the noose and he was quite happy to ‘fish’.
