Nature is a huge part of our Waldorf-inspired home school. We are outside everyday and interacting with the natural environment continually. Everyday there is a large collection of natural finds piled on our kitchen bench. Most of these end up in a nature basket for further exploration or used in a craft. But every so often the kids return with a ‘special’ find and I want to acknowledge the value of ‘specialness’ by giving their find a space. The Waldorf Nature Table concept is a perfect solution.
Setting up a Waldorf nature table will enable me to give these finds a home and provide a physical representation of the current season that can be explored through the senses. Last year we had a nature table but with Strawberry and Ooffa learning to walk and reaching up and pulling things down, it just got all too hard!
I do encourage my children to touch and move the objects on the nature shelf but they are not to take items away to play with. I will continue with our nature baskets for playing and making with our natural finds.
Our nature shelf will ebb and flow with the seasons. It will be added to, rearranged and changed according to our family celebrations. Handmade items by the children and mama crafted items will also find a spot there. The gnomes you see here on our Autumn Waldorf Nature Table were made by the fabulous Kelly from Happy Whimsical Hearts. The table will be improved and added to with new finds and changing seasons. I don’t visualise one table ever looking the same as any other table we do! And that’s exciting and why I love nature tables.
