Fergus To The Rescue by Tony Maddox is the story behind this wonderful invitation to explore. In the story Fergus and the other animals gather up pots and pans from around the farm yard to use as makeshift boats to rescue the chickens from the flood.
I gathered up a selection of random items that could act as boats and our farm animals. I then retold the story using the play prompt as props. I ended the retell with the following invitation to explore: “Which of these items will Fergus use to rescue the animals?”
Science for Preschoolers: Sink and Float
We set up the animals to be rescued on the far side of the water table and then it was time to test which vessels would be best for the ‘rescue’. Chook decided that everything would go into the water at once, making for quite a congested water way!
Amazingly everything floated! But would it stay that way when the rescue began?
As Chook began the rescue it became apparent that some vessels were better than others. There was lots of discussion about sinking and floating. Then as any good scientist would, he began to sort the sinkers and the floaters. He took out the vessels that wouldn’t float with their load and put them UNDER the water table!
Once the precious cargo was safely on board a bit of wind power got them safely to the other side.
Safe at last!
Chook asked for another retell and continued to explore sink or float for several days after.
